Alex Julien
Registered Psychologist
Many people come to therapy feeling confused, guarded, overwhelmed, numb, angry, ashamed, or simply tired of repeating the same patterns. My role is to help us get underneath the surface of that, without rushing you and without pretending the work is simpler than it is. In the room I focus on being relational and engaged. I do not believe therapy should involve sitting politely around the edges of what matters, though I will always respect your pace and readiness.
My experience includes inpatient addiction and mental health programs, group therapy, not-for-profit work, school-based work with teenagers, and therapy with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Across all of these settings, I have found that at the heart of each person’s struggle is a unique way of understanding themselves and the world — something that may have been overlooked, protected, or hurt by difficult experiences. This is where a big part of my work with Internal Family Systems therapy comes in. This means we may spend time getting to know the different parts of you — the parts that cope, protect, avoid, please, shut down, criticise, strive, or carry pain. I aim to help people reconnect with the essence of who they are and to rebuild the trust and confidence in themselves that may have been lost or buried over time.
I also care deeply about doing this work properly. I seek supervision, reflect on my sessions, and pay attention to my own reactions so that they do not get in the way of your therapy. I genuinely care about the people I work with, and I take their progress seriously. I will bring warmth, honesty, curiosity, and steadiness to the therapeutic space, while also holding a strong belief that there is more capacity in you than the problem may currently allow you to see.
